The Cultural Landscape of Hawraman/Uramanat is located at the heart of the Zagros Mountains in the provinces of Kurdistan and Kermanshah along the western border of Iran. Hawraman, pronounced Huraaman is a Kurdish word meaning “Land of our God,” the land of Ahura Mazda (the supreme god in ancient Iranian religion) or Land of the Sun.

The remote and mountainous landscape of Hawraman is the ancient home of the Kurds and bears testimony to the traditional culture of the Hawrami people; an agro-pastoral Kurdish tribe that has resided in the Zagros Mountains for millennia (since 3000 BCE.) by carving out a uniquely colorful, and noticeable mystical existence on their steep mountain slopes where the historic environment and natural landscape remains relatively well-preserved and most historic buildings have kept their traditional form and design throughout centuries-old traditions.

The Hawraman valley is connected by many mountain villages, with a unique stair-like architecture built so steeply on the mountainside that one family’s roof meets another family’s courtyard, making it an exceptional sight to see.

The rich culture of the Kurdish Hawramani people radiates with century-old traditions, colorful and stylish outfits, outstanding folk music and soulful dances, seasonal festivities, outstanding local cuisine, and legendary hospitality towards outside visitors. Ancient religions are also practiced throughout Hawraman, a region home to many ancient holy shrines, legendary mystics, and stories of old.

The well-preserved natural landscape and cultural heritage of Hawraman are among the few remaining cultural pockets in our modern times that continue to exist as they did a thousand years ago!

A paradise for history-lovers, nature-enthusiasts, adventurers, explorers, photographers, and foodies, a tour of the cultural landscape of Hawraman in Western Iran will leave you with an enriched travel experience and a deep sense of nostalgia connected to community and culture.

Hawraman Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the 26th tangible cultural heritage of Iran on July 27, 2021.

The Best time to visit Hawraman is in Spring (late April and May) and during the Fall season.
